President Rodrigo Duterte has signed Republic Act 11691 or the Judiciary Marshals Act that provides for the creation of the Judiciary Marshals Office, Cagayan de Oro 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez said Thursday.
Rodriguez, principal author of the law, said several members of the judiciary and other judicial personnel have been killed over the years in relation to their job.
“Only a few of these killings have been solved. These incidents highlight the need for the judiciary to have its own security and protection service,” he said.
He said the Supreme Court and lower courts should not be made to rely on another branch of the government for their protection.
“They are an independent and co-equal branch, and they should have their own protection unit,” he added.
The service’s principal task is to “protect, defend, safeguard, watch over, provide security for, and ensure the safety of justices, judges, court officials and personnel, halls of justice, courthouses, court buildings, and other court properties.”
The unit shall also be charged with ensuring that court proceedings, trials and hearings, conferences, seminars, and meetings are conducted in an orderly manner.
It shall conduct threat assessments and investigate crimes against judiciary members, personnel and properties.
DS Rodriguez thanks President Duterte for acting on the said measure that will ensure integrity of the courts and its proceedings. (PR)
