BFP Mambajao recognizes role of women in ensuring fire-safe homes

MAMBAJAO, Camiguin (PIA)--Women, particularly those staying at home, play a significant role in keeping our community safe from fire-related incidents, an official from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) here said.
“Ang babae dako gyud kaayo siya’g tabang nga ma-prevent nato ang sunog sa atong tagsa-tagsa ka mga panimalay (Women are a really big help in efforts to prevent fires in each of our houses),” Provincial Acting Director of BFP Mambajao SInsp Policarpo Bacolcol Jr. said during ‘Alerto!’ radio program, March 29. He said because women are often at home, they are able to monitor what happens inside and are able to prevent any incidents.
BFP receives reports of kitchen or cooking-related fires more often than any other kind of fire incidents in the area. To avoid these, Bacolcol said women need to be attentive and mindful while cooking. Clean and organized kitchens also prevent the risk of burnt food, broken pipes, and gas leaks which are the primary reasons for these fires.
For her part, Kalipunan ng Liping Pilipina (KALIPI)-Provincial Federation President Marichu Gulle said she has taken measures to ensure that their household is prepared for fire incidents. According to her, she always reminds her children to avoid distractions while cooking, and explains to them the dangers of fires.
In addition, Gulle said she has also prepared a ‘Go Bag’ for her family which she keeps nearby in case of fire or other emergency. She said this Go Bag contains important documents, a first aid kit, personal care items, and other necessities.
During this year’s observance of the National Fire Prevention Month, Bacolcol Jr. commended the participation of women firefighters in the Fire Olympics, a showcase of BFP personnel’s firefighting skills and knowledge. Furthermore, he also enjoined public support for the programs of the BFP such as the Oplan Ligtas Pamayanan and fire safety inspection of establishments ensuring fire-safe homes and communities.
