Lacson-Sotto to gov’t: Continue good programs, improve what needs fixing

The government should focus on keeping the wheels of the economy moving especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Partido Reporma chairman and standard bearer Panfilo “Ping” Lacson said Thursday, even as his party was not relying on the administration’s endorsement ahead of the 2022 national elections.
Lacson said that regardless of administration, worthwhile programs like the “Build Build Build” infrastructure push should be pursued by the succeeding government, as they keep the engine of the economy running, which the country sorely needs.
“Ke i-endorse, ke-hindi, talaga namang ‘yung mga magagandang programa dapat ituloy, lalo 'yung ‘Build, Build, Build’,” the longtime public servant said in Partido Reporma’s weekly “Meet the Press” via Zoom.
[Whether we are endorsed or not, the good programs should really be continued, especially the ‘Build Build Build’.]
“Alam mo, dahil sa panahon ng pandemya, ‘yung gobyerno dapat ‘yung magpapagulong, magpapatuloy ng paggulong o kaya pag-andar ‘nung engine ng economy. Kasi nawalan ng trabaho ang maraming tao, so ‘yung spending capacity (nila) nabawasan. So, dapat dito papasok talaga ang gobyerno by way of infrastructure,” added the veteran senator.
[Because of this pandemic period, the government should keep the wheels, the engine of the economy moving. As many people have lost their jobs, so have their spending capacity. The government should intervene (to create jobs) by way of infrastructure.]
“Yung ‘Build, Build, Build’ program napakagandang programa niyan e kasi ‘yan ‘yung investment na merong balik, merong ROI (return on investment). So—at saka ‘yung pagtugon sa pandemya, dapat i-improve kasi nakita namin ni Senate President, may mga areas na dapat lagyan ng improvement,” Lacson added.
[The ‘Build, Build, Build’ program is really great because that’s an investment with a return, with an ROI. So – as with our response to the pandemic, the government should improve because we’ve seen, the Senate President (Vicente “Tito” Sotto III) and I, there are areas that need improvement.]
Lacson was asked if Partido Reporma was willing to accept the endorsement of President Rodrigo Duterte, after Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, who is withdrawing from the presidential race, said the administration was open to supporting other candidates as long as their programs on infrastructure, pandemic response and the Malasakit Centers are continued.
“Napakaraming pwedeng i-improve actually. But, whether we’ll be endorsed or not, ‘yung mga magagandang programa dapat ituloy, pero ‘yung mga may kahinaan dapat i-improve,” Lacson said.
[There are so many things that could be improved actually. But whether we’ll be endorsed or not, the good programs should continue, but the others with weaknesses need to be improved.]
Sotto echoed the statement, adding: “Yes, the good programs dapat talaga ituloy at ‘yung mga programa na ‘yon i-enhance, i-improve, not change. Ganoon ang attitude namin, tama po ‘yon, whether we are endorsed or not. Ganoon lang ‘yung thinking namin.”
[Yes, the good programs should continue, and the (other) programs should be enhanced, improved, not changed. That’s our attitude, whether we are endorsed or not. That’s our thinking.] (PR)
