By Alwen SaliringSOME 88 tourism-related establishments in Northern Mindanao have permanently shut down their operations amid the prolonged health crisis.
Leonila Cajarte, assistant regional director of the National Economic Development Authority-Northern Mindanao (NEDA-10), said 15 of 88 are in the provinces while 73 are in the different cities in the region.
On the other hand, 281 firms are now authorized to operate, 106 in provinces while 175 are in the different cities.
The report also said 24 other establishments are still complying with the requirements so they can start their operation.
The Covid-19 pandemic has adversely affected the tourism sector forcing several establishments to close down and thousands of workers ended up jobless.
Misamis Oriental's tourism industry alone suffered over P150 million losses in revenue in the second quarter due to the prolonged health crisis.
However, the Provincial Tourism Office remains positive that the tourism sector would eventually recover as it continues to promote the different tourist destinations across the province.
Data from the Tourism Office showed that the industry incurred P150, 468, 334 losses due to the effects of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) from March to June.
Also, around 1,799 workers have lost their jobs.
Provincial Tourism Officer lawyer Jeffrey Saclot said initiatives have already been undertaken to help the industry recover the soonest.
